County Museum

Музей Графства Amsterdam museums

A visit to the Museum Amsterdam Noord is an opportunity to go back to the origins of the strong and freedom-loving character of the person living in the Netherlands.

Unlike the rest of Amsterdam's attractions, it is close to the residents of the city and often provides a platform for a variety of exhibitions. The County Museum is a chance to learn the history of Dutch life from the first settlements to modern civilization.

History

The building, as a museum, first opened its doors to visitors in 2009, but it was built in 1919 after World War I.

It is noteworthy that once it was a bathhouse. In the post-war years, the city faced an acute shortage of housing and it was urgently decided to build small communes: Disteldorp, Vogeldorp and Van der Pekbuurt.

Houses were created without amenities, but especially for the hygiene of the inhabitants, baths were built separately. The County Museum building was the bathhouse of the Vogeldorp municipality until 1986. It was soon sold and given away as a museum. Until now, the walls of the institution keep the spirit of the events of those times, harmoniously intertwined with modernity.

Exposition

The main goal is to preserve and communicate to posterity the history of development, including architecture, industry, and living conditions of the people of the northern Gulf of Ai region, through the participation of the people of Amsterdam and the Netherlands themselves.

The County Museum is funded by the administration and residents of the city. The area it occupies is small, so it is divided into two rooms: a demonstration room and a room for lectures or watching videos.

The showroom holds temporary exhibitions of paintings, photographs, and organizes viewings of private collections of citizens of the country.

The second hall involves interactive communication through meetings with participants in events of past years, showing films about the history of development of the northern region.

The museum administration does not set exact themes for exhibitions or lectures. Topics can range from "Milk Production" to personal memoirs from the series "My Youth in the North".

Suggestions for visitors

A distinctive feature of the County Museum is its impermanence. The exhibitions make a visit to the museum another journey through time. Visiting them, you will encounter diversity, you will feel the importance of being the inhabitants of the region, which entailed the development of a strong Dutch spirit.

In addition to the exhibitions, the museum administration organizes interesting bicycle tours around the city. If you would like to take a walk on your own, the staff will be happy to suggest interesting routes.

It is not uncommon to organize a group visit. To do this, make a request and you will be provided with an experienced guide, who speaks two languages (as do all employees): Dutch or English. Group visits are also possible after hours, which is available to tourists from other countries.
